Porcelain inlays and onlays provide strong, long-lasting, and natural-looking reinforcement of decay-weakened teeth. Porcelain inlays and onlays look and perform similar to your natural teeth. In the past, porcelain fillings weren't durable enough to withstand the extensive biting and chewing necessary for use on back teeth, but new advanced ceramic materials have made porcelain an ideal material for fillings throughout the mouth.
The Procedure
Porcelain fillings are put in over the course of a two office visits. The first step is to prepare the tooth for the porcelain fillings by removing any decay and carefully etching the surface of the tooth to receive the porcelain inlay or onlay.
Once your tooth is ready, a mold will be taken of the cavity area. This mold will then be sent to an LVI-certified dental lab where a high-quality aesthetic prosthetic will be created.
After the mold has been taken, your cavity will be filled with a temporary filling to minimize any discomfort caused by the cavity.
Once the porcelain filling has been created you will be invited back to have the temporary filling replaced by the permanent filling placed, which is bonded to your tooth.
