Metal-Free Filling FAQs

What are metal-free fillings?
Metal-free fillings are made of an advanced ceramic material and used in place of silver amalgam fillings to treat cavities or decayed teeth. These metal-free fillings contain no traces of mercury and are designed to match the natural color of your other teeth.
How long will my metal-free filling last?
Composite resin fillings are stronger and more durable than silver fillings. There are different factors that will determine how long your metal-free filling will last. Size, location and the forces your tooth is exposed to will all dictate how many years your restoration will stay intact. Generally speaking, smaller fillings will last longer—perhaps your entire lifetime. Larger fillings can last for decades, if properly cared for. By practicing proper dental hygiene—brushing and flossing daily—you can help ensure your fillings last for many years.
Is it necessary that I change my silver fillings to metal-free fillings?
It is not generally recommended to change out your fillings unless there are fractures or cavities in your teeth. The drilling you must undergo to change you fillings can irritate the tooth, so dental professionals often advise against any unnecessary dental work.
What are the advantages of metal-free fillings?
Metal-free fillings are matched to the color of your real teeth, so restorations are virtually undetectable and result in a natural-looking smile. Compared to silver fillings, the same amount of decayed tooth can be restored with a much smaller composite filling, so less of your tooth’s natural structure is lost. Metal-free fillings also bond to your tooth, which creates a tighter seal while strengthening and supporting your tooth’s structure.
How will it feel afterward?
After the anesthesia has worn off, your metal-free filling will feel comfortable, like your natural teeth. Many people experience some level of sensitivity after they receive a filling, although this is generally much less for ceramic fillings than metal amalgam. At first, your tooth may be sensitive to pressure, air, sweets or temperatures. Composite fillings often cause sensitivity, but that feeling will wear off in a week or two. Until it does, it’s a good idea to avoid anything that causes discomfort. If the sensitivity does not wear off, schedule an appointment with the dentists at trans zen dental.
