What is a dental crown?
A dental crown, also called a dental cap, is a restoration that covers the tooth in order to repair a broken tooth or strengthen a decayed tooth. A crown’s main function is to return your tooth to its natural structure and enhance the appearance of your smile overall. Dental crowns look and feel just like your natural teeth, and depending on the type of material you choose, few people will be able to tell the difference.
What types of materials are available for crowns?
There are different materials, ranging in price and strength. You can discuss which option is best for you, depending on your specific dental needs and the suggestions of the dentists at trans zen dental. A crown can be made of:
- Metals: These can be gold, various alloys (such as palladium) or base-metal alloys (such as nickel). With metals, less of your tooth needs to be removed for these crowns. They last the longest in terms of wear, and rarely chip or break. Their color is the major drawback; so many people choose these crowns for hidden molars.
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal: These dental crowns can be color matched to your adjacent teeth, unlike solid metal. These are the strongest type of crown, but can also cause more wear to the adjacent teeth. Occasionally, the underlying metal can show at the gum line. These are also best for out-of-sight teeth.
- All-porcelain: These crowns provide the best natural color match than any other crown type and are also good for people with metal allergies. They are not as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, but are the best option for visible teeth.
Does a crowned tooth require special care?
The tooth on which the crown is covering must be protected from gum disease or tooth decay. You should maintain good oral hygiene; brush your teeth twice a day and floss regularly—especially around the crown area where the gum meets the tooth and see your hygienist regularly.
How long will my dental crowns last?
Dental crowns typically last between five and 15 years, but your crown’s lifespan will depend on the amount of wear and tear it is exposed to, and how well you take care of it. Your mouth habits (grinding, biting your fingernails, clenching your teeth, using your teeth to open bottles and packages) will have a direct impact on the longevity of your crown.
Is it possible for my dental crown to pop off?
It’s rare, but possible for your crown to pop off. If this happens, it must be replaced immediately for sensitivity and aesthetic reasons. Call the dentists at trans zen dental and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Make sure to tell our office why you’re calling.
