Dental Crowns
Smile Makeover Specialist
Your smile is usually the first thing another person notices about you. And others often make judgments about you based on that smile. If you’re unsatisfied or self-conscious by a cracked, broken or missing tooth—dental crowns might be just what you need.
A Perfect Fit
A dental crown is a restoration that protects a damaged tooth or root and preserves its functionality. Dental crowns are also referred to as “caps” because they are crowns that sit over your natural teeth, covering the entire surface similar to how a baseball cap fits over your head.
Different Kinds
Crowns are ideal to fix major dental problems caused by disease, accidents, or wear and tear. Dental crowns can be made out of different materials; all metal (gold and other alloys), porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all porcelain.
If you’ve lost a tooth in an accident, or if one of your teeth has broken from excessive wear and tear, crowns can be an effective long-term solution. For serious dental repairs, high-grade porcelain and gold are recommended because the material is better quality and stronger.
You may be a good candidate for a crown if:
- A large portion of your tooth has fractured and it can not be strengthened through bonding.
- You have a serious cavity and want additional protection.
- Your tooth has severely decayed and there is not enough remaining tooth structure to support a filling or inlay.
- You need additional strengthening after a root canal treatment.
- Acid erosion from a poor diet or grinding your teeth has reduced or seriously damaged your teeth.
Alleviate Pain
Some people also experience mysterious pain in the back of their mouth after having a cavity filled. This is often caused by cracks in the chewing part of your tooth. By applying a crown on these teeth, the pain is alleviated and your back teeth can return to function as they normally would.
Have Your Teeth Grown Weak?
Older fillings in your front teeth can grow weaker throughout the years and start to chip. Dental crowns are appropriate when porcelain veneers are not, because crowns can provide additional support to teeth severely damaged by decay or breakage. Because of their strengthening characteristic, crowns are often used after a root canal and to reinforce a damaged tooth.
The Process
Dental crowns typically take about two dentist visits. The dentists at trans zen dental will remove the old filling and clean the decay, she will then fill and shape your tooth and fit it with a temporary crown. An impression will be taken and sent it to a dental laboratory where your crown will be fabricated. At the next visit, the crown will be seated and an x-ray will be taken. The crown will then be cemented in place and any necessary adjustments will be made to the bite to the patient’s satisfaction.
